About the Author
Stormy Attaway is Assistant Professor and Faculty Coordinator for Special Programs within the Mechanical Engineering Department at Boston University. She also currently serves as Director of Curricular Assessment and Improvement for the College of Engineering. In this capacity, she coordinates the curricular assessment and improvement programs within the College, in order to better the academic experience of the undergraduates. She has been the course coordinator for the Engineering Computation courses at Boston University for over twenty years, and has taught a variety of programming courses using many different languages and software packages.

To use this very practical book effectively, one must(should) have some level of the...MATLAB software...installed or have access to it.
Though not a Programmed Instruction book, common in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, you are encouraged to work your way through the book. That is, from the very beginning you are working with actual code as you learn the proper formats. You learn by actually being a participant rather than an observer! Questions, problems, and meaningful exercises are the main methods for teaching and learning used in this book. They are plentiful throughout the book. Each page requires the reader to actually practice what is being taught. The book provide the proper formats for MATLAB coding.

A beginner will find this book to be a full-fledged source for learning MATLAB. Those with experience would find it useful for reviewing in general and/or refreshing one's memory of topics and techniques that may have become cloudy. Thus the book serves the dual purposes of a learning source as well as an excellent source of review....The Chapters are....

I am currently using this book and have never used MATLAB before. I find this book's approach to be ideal for my interests and background. As a result I am giving it five stars.

Short and sour

So, you shouldn't attempt to write a novel till you're middle-aged? Kanehara wrote this when she was 21 and maybe it shows. The voice is authentic, the world is recognisably cold as it appears to 21 year olds and it feels very real. All too real. And this is the tale of a sado-masochistic love triangle, murder, cover-ups and body piercings. Not for the squeamish. But the prose is mean and lean and effective for its lack of backstory, or, truth be told, much of a plot. I can see why some folk hated it and others see it as a cult classic. It's a female Japanese Holden Cauldfield into body piercings. Not the kind of book I'd like to run through with my daughter, but apparently Kanehara's Dad edited her manuscript. And there is guile here, it's not chance that this won Japan's top literary prize. It presses all the right buttons -- body modification, the rise of the freeters (Japanese zero-hour workers) not to mention sexy, independent women, and youngsters dissatisfied with the status quo. Short but definitely not sweet.

About the Author
VALERIE STEIKER, the editor of this book, is the culture editor at Vogue and the author of The Leopard Hat: A Daughter's Story and the editor, with Chris Knutsen, of a collection of essays, Brooklyn Was Mine. The ten illustrators are: from America, Helen Dryden, Harriet Meserole, Rita Senger, E.M.A Steinmetz, Arthur Gavin Finley, and George Wolfe Plank; from France, Georges Lepape, Pierre Mourgue, André Marty; and from Spain, Eduardo García Benito. Most of them were born in the 1880s or '90s; some, even the Americans, studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris; one—George Wolfe Plank—was self taught; and Arthur Gavin Finley also moonlighted as a magician, called Henry Gavin, credited with the invention of the Tent Vanish Trick.

26 Fashion Designs plus fold-out and more – American Vogue Covers – printed on both sides of page

[[VIDEOID:2427d63a305d1f35d68a1b7056e1961d]]At the time that I write this review, there two different Vogue coloring books that have just been released. The other one is based on British Vogue and this book is based on American Vogue magazine. They are quite different in time period, style, and print.

There are 26 designs based on magazine covers from 1912 to 1932. Each one is associated with a letter of the alphabet. For example, the first one I chose to color (using Prismacolor Premier Soft Core pencils) is of a young woman pushing a wheelbarrow of flowers on a windy day. The magazine is from June 15, 1915, and the editors of this book associated the design with W for wheelbarrow. The design is on the front of the back and the letter and stylized illustration (plus W is for wheelbarrow) is on the back of the page.

In addition to the 26 designs, there are coloring opportunities on the fold out flaps of the front and back cover. Better still is a lovely four page fold-out at the back of the book which is printed front and back with a design from each of the years between 1912 and 1932.

All of the designs include some small details that may be a bit difficult to color. The artwork is appears to have been sketched but the lines are a tad squiggly and there are disconnects that make it more difficult to color. I also noted that the title and other print on the designs have been done with a weird wiggly typeface. I think that the point is to make the design appear vintage but, in many cases, it merely makes it look a little odd. This issue would not keep me from buying the book as I really love the designs otherwise but it certainly impacts my enjoyment of it. If I could place a rating of 4.5 on this book, I would do so; however, as I cannot, I always round up to the next highest star.

I will provide more detail about the physical coloring book below but here is a quick overview of what I found:

Hybrid Glue and Sewn Binding
Alcohol-based markers seep through this page slightly
Water-based markers, India ink pens, and gel pens do not seep through the page
Coloring pencils work well with this paper but have blending issues

The designs in this book are printed on both sides of the page. The paper used is really nice heavyweight, white, and non-perforated. The actual fashion designs are on one side of the page while the letter associated is on the back. For me, that equals a waste page if I want to use alcohol-based markers. If I use any other medium, I can also color that back page as well.

The binding is both glued and sewn (with lots of little stitches that are impossible to snip.) The designs do not merge into the binding area. You will have to cut pages out if you want to remove them from the book but you won't lose any portion of the design in doing so. I would have loved to seen perforations on this coloring book for easy removal for framing, This is a fairly thick book but getting it to open flat was really easy.

There are many extras such as the fashion elements on both the front and back page fold-outs as well as the four-page fold-out printed with 21 fashionable designs – one for each of the years represented by the covers. There is also a full color thumbnail of each of the cover designs with a short blurb about it should you wish to follow the original colors. I went my own way for my first project but I certainly had fun looking at the original, seeing the designer, and getting the history of the outfit.

I test my coloring books with various medium (which I will list in the comments area for anyone interested in the list.) My tests are not exhaustive as I spend about half an hour per book with my tests. The tests do give me an idea of how the different medium react to the paper but not the experience of coloring a full design. Here are the results of my tests on this book:

Alcohol-based markers do bleed through but only the tiniest bit. No other wet medium bleed through at all. That includes water-based markers, India ink pens, and gel pens. Gel pens definitely require more drying time than usual.

Coloring pencils worked well for regular coverage and for layering. My issue arose with blending. My blends were very uneven – with a much darker stain in the middle and only slight color to the sides I was blending. This was true of both wax and oil based pencils. I would have liked to have attempted some blending, especially in the backgrounds but, at least at my skill level, I will have to abstain. My hard lead pencils worked well – but I don't attempt to blend those as that is not how I use them. I find that they are good for some detail areas where my soft lead pencil tips cannot fit.

A Captivating Coloring Book!

A stunning book! As I leafed through the pages, I was riveted by the attention to detail. The motifs on the endpapers begin the journey and as a bonus, can be colored. The Vogue covers provide just enough black lines to color - but not too much - and the paper quality is excellent. I especially love the pullout pages of dresses from 1912-1932 - reminded me of paper doll books from my childhood. Also, the colorized versions of the Vogue covers appear in the back, in case you need some inspiration! Am buying copies for my friends and their children. What a delight!

Classic book. Sherrod has given an eye witness account of a pivotal battle. No varnish, just the naked truth. Well written. Sell was honest about the condition of the volume and got it to me right on time. Good people.

A Military Classic by a war correspondent who was there.

Robert Sherrod was a war correspondent for Time when he waded ashore Tarawa on the afternoon of D-Day, 11/20/43. Aboard his transport ship Sherrod heard fascinating tales of the Gilbert Islands before the war, tales told to him by his shipmates, Karl Tschaun and James Forbes. Both of these men had lived and worked among these island paradises and now returned to share their knowledge of the waters with the allies.
One does not get the big picture from such first hand accounts. Indeed, for the first three days Sherrod's movements were confined to an area 400 yards along the beach and no further inland than 100 yards. Instead, the reader hears the authentic voice of one who has been there, one who heard first hand the anticipation that the island would be a cake walk and then saw men horribly chopped to pieces as they went ashore. But for Sherrod to get to Tarawa he too had to wade 700 yards across the reef which surrounded and protected the island. During this march no fewer than five machine guns were firing upon him and the few Marines with him.
Reaching the beachhead, he sat for hours with his back to the coconut log seawall. A Marine walks by, a sniper hits his helmet and amazingly he is unharmed. The next one a moment later takes a bullet through the heart just inches from where Sherrod sat. Looking out over those coral flats the next morning "...a half dozen Marines lie exposed... They are hunched over, rifles in hand, just as they fell. Further out on the flats I can see at least fifty other bodies...The smell of death, that sweetly sick odor of decaying human flesh, is already oppressive. Now that it is light, the wounded go walking by... Some have bloodless faces, some have bloody faces, others only pieces of faces."
The second day was worse for the waves of men and machines coming ashore. Japanese reinforcements had moved across the island and waited for the assault craft and the men who trudged through the water. Through the trained eye of a seasoned reporter, Sherrod tells of the horror, the cacophony of large cannon fire, machine weapons, the crack of rifles and the unending shaking of the earth from multiple explosions. Across this half-mile square of hell and mangled bodies the Marines, the men of the 2nd Division, inched forward, dying by the hundreds but always moving towards the enemy.
Sherrod tells of their ultimate victory in a manner befitting their valor.

Great book!

I am quite impressed. For .99 its a must for all Kindle owners! It has a very fast pace and never slows down. I started reading it and never stopped until I was finished. For a first book from a budding author, its quite amazing. I would recommend it to all ages. Its really quite amazing and I can't wait for the sequel! :]

Carbon is a fresh of breath air-- a fun read, fast paced, engaging story about a young woman whose journey to find her father delves into a struggle for her life and freedom. She's got some help, however, in the form of a super awesome high tech, 'sentient' Dodge Challenger. If you like young adult action, or muscle cars, or action adventure, or all three, read Carbon! I really enjoyed reading it and look forward to the rest of the series.

in 1789 the U.S. was anarchic and in financial difficulty. How the new constitution would work and if it would survive were far from certain. M. ably tells the story of how the country was formed. Fortunately, the Federalists pushed for a strong central government. Hamilton was, of course, the leading proponent of ideas. As an organizer and plotter he was extremely inept. The book allows the author the leisure to describe those early developments in detail.
among the details is the unfettered vitriol of the press. there were two fox news channels, one for each of the emerging parties. neither valued truth or even its most distant relatives.
the growth of parties was a major factor in improving voter turnout, which was low.
The Federalists turned the paper constitution into a manageable system--and then expired from their own elitism. We can, however, be glad that they had their day. Amateur historians who wish to understand U.S. history will benefit from this book.
