Great read, my uncle gave me a copy of the original notes from Lewis and Clark's expedition, but that reads like a research book not entertaining. I can't remember the title, but this book captures the history and is very enjoyable to read.

A good but brief overview of the expedition, although at times it moved a little too fast and I would have liked more detail. Maps would also have been helpful. In a few places needed better editing. I liked that it brought closure by describing what happened to some of the main characters.

Vital for smaller businesses, still good for larger ones

I recommend this to all my entrepreneur friends. Especially those who have businesses grossing under $5m. After that they pretty much get it. But I do reread the book every year or two just to make sure I still understand. Really good stuff. Wish it had been around when I was starting up!

Solid book

I saw Greg speak at an event earlier this year and it really inspired me to think differently about how I manage the cash flow of my business. He had several concepts that made me sit back and think. I began working on the ideas from his speech and it really made a difference in my life. It was nice to see that his book took those same ideas and added stories to further my understanding. The key takeaways were simple to understand and not difficult to implement as long as I committed to making them happen. The book is a positive nudge toward managing the cash flow of business correctly.

It was Pretty Good

This book had a really good blurb. The outline of the story is intriguing, and dramatic. You just know it is going to be dark, and full of exciting stuff, only, it's just mediocre at best. There were no serious editing problems, the flow of the story was seamless, and it had plenty of detail, but it wasn't nearly as flavorful as it seemed it would be. I have read several dark romances, and this one was very mild. It was pretty good, but it wasn't as fascinating as it could have been. I think a lot of people will like this story. Those being the type who like older guy, younger girl romances, those who like a lite variety of the darker side. It was just ok for me. It is not bad, by any means, so I definitely would recommend it to those who aren't into the hardcore dark erotica.

Strong start to an interesting series!

I think that there are three in this series; I thought this was the first one but it wasn’t. Needless, it doesn’t matter if you’ve read the other – it is a standalone and the way that the other book is referenced just helps to add to this storyline.

Patrick is the head of the Irish mafia (Italian and Russian are the other mafias in town) and he had to kill one of his men – a good friend – five years ago to keep peace in the city. Before his death, his friend asked him to take in his daughter, Lauren, and keep her safe. Just about 18, Patrick realized he was attracted to Lauren so he sends her off to Dublin to a women’s college for school… but now she’s back and she has her heart and eyes set on Patrick.

As for the disclaimer of it being a “dark romance”, please don’t let that hold you back from reading this book. I guess it is dark from the standpoint of the fact he killed her father, or his rather brusque and cavalier attitude toward showing her what his life really entails (he beats up a man and then kills a man in front of her), and she does get slapped by a rival boss. However, when I think of a dark romance I think of Pepper Winters or Lili Valente, and Lauren is in no way imprisoned or subjugated by Patrick. I think that if you are reading a “mafia romance” genre book, you aren’t expecting unicorns and rainbows, so it will be fine!

What a great book!

What a great book! Patrick is the head of the Irish mafia, who would have thought such a tuff guy could be so sweet, but only to Lauren that is. Even though he loves Lauren he tries his best to keep at arm’s length. The attraction is mutual between the two; Lauren has been in love with Patrick from day one. Patrick's been hiding a secret; this secret could be the end to the relationship as secrets often do. Will the love they have for each other survive? Or will other forces tear them apart?

I enjoyed the love story between the two, the suspense and the mystery. The bedroom scenes are scorching hot with a touch of consensual ruff sex. The bad guys will have you surprised! I'm very excited start to read the next one book in this series. I would definitely recommend this story to my friends. I received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank you

Gavriel Rosenfeld is Associate Professor of History at Fairfield University (Connecticut). He is a specialist in the history and memory of the Third Reich and the Holocaust. His previous publications include Munich and Memory: Architecture, Monuments, and the Legacy of the Third Reich (2000).

Interesting Look At Alternate Hitler History

Gayriel Rosenfeld's very interesting "The World Hitler Never Made" is a fair and thorough survey of the literature (particularly fiction) that sprang up after World War II asking "what if" the war had turned out differently. Not surprisingly, much of what Rosenfeld examines is science fiction, since that is the genre that is most able to handle that kind of historical/social speculation. This book looks at Philip K. Dick's masterful The Man in the High Castle; Robert Harris' Fatherland: A Novel (Mortalis) both book and movie; C.M. Kornbluth's novella "Two Dooms", which is found in His Share of Glory: The Complete Short Science Fiction of C.M. Kornbluth; Stephen Fry's comic Making History; the almost forgotten-by-everyone pulp novel Who Will Watch the Watchers which I read when I was a kid; and many others.

My favorite of this genre is Norman Spinrad's amazing The Iron Dream which I urge everyone to go out and buy immediately. Rosenfeld raises the question whether Spinrad's historical pessimism lets Hitler off the hook a little bit: in the novel, the Holocaust happens anyway in the Soviet Union even though Hitler never came to power and ended up a hack sci-fi writer in America. I don't agree with this spin on Spinrad, but it's interesting to think about. In spite of all the large historical forces at work, individuals have to be held accountable for the evil that they do. Rosenfeld's not unexpected conclusion is that Hitler was a dominant, horrific figure in the imagination of the culture and we are unlikely to forget him for the foreseeable future.

Incidentally, this book is advertised as a survey of the literature about alternate histories, not as a factual "expert's perspective of what a world in which the Nazi's won WWII would look like." So it's missing the point to give this book only two stars for not being something it was never intended or advertised to be in the first place.

Balanced opinion on "The world Hitler never made"

This is a very well written and scholarly text which provides a nigh on encyclopedic coverage of material published on alternate histories of the rise and fall of Hitler. It also reviews what those histories may signify for an understanding of the cultural import of the rise and fall of fascism and, in fact, the perception that "national socialism" never went away, it just returns under other guises.

From a British point of view the book manages very clearly and persuasively to present the changing manner in which the defeat of Nazi Germany was represented in the general media, not only novels and plays, but as importantly in comic books, television and film. The author shows commendable scholarship in his ability to review work from a broad spectrum of genres, from newspapers and literary plays to sci-fi novels and comics.

I would recommend this work to anyone who wishes to get a very up to date "crash course" in thinking on the impact and the import of events in the middle of the 20th century on contemporary culture, on the consciousness of that culture and of the scholarship of those reflecting upon those events. It is not a book in the same vein as the superb volume on alternate history "Unmaking the West"Unmaking the West: "What-If?" Scenarios That Rewrite World Historyconcerned as it is with the second order issue of the role of popular culture considering the impact of alternate histories,but it has to be reviewed on its own terms and therein it does an excellent job.

A fascinating overview of Nazi Alt-Histories

As I've said in previous reviews I'm a big fan of alternate history, with my favourite scenario being 'what if the Nazis had won WW2?'. So far I've only ever read novels in this genre - but 'The World Hitler never made' is my first sortie into non-fiction.

This book is a summary and analysis of the victorious Third Reich books, films and TV shows of the past 70 years or so. It's incredibly detailed and unearths some real gems, as well as stinkers and books/films that are mostly forgotten now.

Rosenfeld puts forward an interesting argument as to why this sub-genre of alternate history continues to haunt the imagination. He also shows how the genre has changed and why it has been so successful. One interesting parallel he points out is the link between recessions and 'what ifs' selling well. That being the case, and given the state we're in, I guess we're due another big hit any day soon! 'Fatherland 2', anybody?

Two criticisms: it can be a bit repetitive (he shows again and again how the books/films fit his pattern; I got it the first time!) and some of the analysis is a bit dry. This is clearly meant as a more academic leaning book rather than being for the general reader. Nevertheless a fascinating volume and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the subject.

what damage one unfair review can do; are Amazon.com reviews useful?

As a non-biologist (nuclear chemist/experimental physicist) I read Dr. Pollack's book with interest, in 2006, and found it relevant to our work - and plausible. However, I made a mistake and read a review, by apparently a fellow Faculty (Alexander Stein), enclosed below.
Reading it - peremptorily, admittedly - I decided not to learn more about biology...
Recently I found out that Dr. Pollack got the highest reward from his fellow Faculty for his research. By the way, it still is very relevant to our research. We do plan to pursue it.
It's true I should have gone deeper into this - but one simply cannot do everything.
The way Amazon manages these reviews is flawed ("the highest and the lowest"). Perhaps there should be a warning that there is a significant probability that some reviews may not be done in good faith.

The flawed review:

Changed My View of Science

During my senior year of bioengineering at ASU, one of my instructors recommended that I read this book. I went on Amazon and purchased a copy. Tragically, I let it sit on my shelf for almost six months without reading it. About a year ago, I picked it up and read it, expecting it to be a labor-intensive read. It was not. Instead, in very simple terms and using simple yet convincing examples, Pollack managed to challenge everything I ever learned in school in two days (It only took two days because I found myself reading this book every chance I got; I coult not put it down).
Challenging even many of the basic tenets of cellular biology-- from even the existance of selective ion channels in the fluid mosaic model of the cell wall to blowing the lid off of what every student is taught in school about the way muscle cells contract--Pollack writes a book that has been and will continue to be challenging, because it challenges the premises of the life-long work of many scientists.
While I'm sure that some of his critiques of the beliefs of the faith of cellular biology today will prove to be wrong, Pollack is not afraid of the challenge or the community backlash against him. I applaud the work. I recommend it as required reading for just about everybody: the writing style makes it accessible for even high school students, but it is not too plebian to challenge even a professor or researcher in the area.
