Rational Analysis for a Problematic World Problem Structuring Methods for Complexity Uncertainty and Conflict Now, more than ever, planning and managing in the real world is beset by change and uncertainty. Knowledge is incomplete, values are in dispute, decisions of others are often unpredictable. Sheathed in opaque technicalities, inflexible and overambitious, the highly mathematical methods of analysing problem situations—largely unquestioned until the mid 1970s—are no longer considered acceptable. In their place a coherent alternative paradigm has emerged—a range of formal methodologies which aim not to produce ‘optimal’ solutions but to facilitate an enriched decision-making process. ‘Low-tech’ transparent and participatory, these methods assist in the formulation and reformulation of problem situation in an uncertain world. This specially commissioned volume brings together the most influential of these new methods. Each is elaborated in two chapters: the first describes the principles on which the method operates, the steps and stages of the analysis and their relation to the decision process, while the second illustrates its application in a case study. I have done masters degree in MATHEMATICS and have done some management courses also. Here I am a PROFESSOR in a COLLEGE where students do B.SC. from LONDON university under EXTERNAL PROGRAM. One of the subjects I teach is "MANAGEMENT SCIENCE METHODS". There is a portion namely "SOFT OR" for which we could not find material from any where else. This book has not only no alternate but also written in very simple way with technical examples and flow diagrams. My students last year got the DISTINCTION in this subject and this year I am also expecting DISTINCTION again from students. So I wanted to contact the auther and compliment the person. Finally as a teacher I would recommend strongly this book for the students of BSC. in MSM especially for the SOFT OR section, this is a must read.

About the Author

Robert S. Leiken has been a Senior Fellow at Harvard's Center for International Affairs, the Carnegie Endowment, CSIS, and the Brookings Institution and director of the Immigration Program at The Center for the National Interest. His commentaries have appeared in many major U.S newspapers; his essays in Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The New York Review of Books, The New Republic, The National Interest, The Weekly Standard and The Times Literary Supplement. He has authored books on immigration, Central America, and Soviet strategy. He is presently writing a memoir.

Why no other reviews of this great book?

I'm astounded that mine is the first review here, although the book has been available for 6 months. If the goal of a non-fiction is to teach a great deal on a particular topic of interest, this may be the best book that I've read in years. And the subject is one that should be important to everyone: Muslims and why they are angry. The author dissects the subject by country, explaining how which Muslims came from where and settled in select parts of European countries. He explains why so many have been radicalized despite influences from Western cultures. He explains why England's Muslims are angrier than France's despite the fact that France is less accommodating. And so much more.

Why should Americans care about radicalized Muslims in the suburbs of London? Because they are the ones who are most likely to fly planes into our buildings, more so than Muslims from Syria, Iraq or Iran. And they are the ones that the Muslims communities here interact with.

Again, an extremely well researched, well written book on an important topic.

A Big Breath of Fresh Air

I have read a number of books lately concerning Islam, the history of Islamic expansion, and the danger posed to Western culture by Islamic aspirations for conquest. As I read Dr. Leiken's book: Europe's Angry Muslims, I started to notice something different. The book is impressively informative and would seem to be indisputably accurate, if for no other reason than Dr. Leiken's use of several hundreds of cited sources . Dr. Leiken draws parallels using the UK, France and Germany. He provides extensive explanations of each country's method of governing their former colonies. He goes on to provide each country's history with Islamic immigration. And he shows how each country's method of governing colonies affects their approaches to governing their homelands now. With all these connections in place, he then shows how each country regards, and is regarded by, its Islamic population.

What I found so refreshing was that nowhere does Dr. Leiken draw a conclusion, take a position, advance a judgement, or otherwise insert his own feelings into the matter. It is an authentic example of "no spin". Bravo! So that's what anthropology is supposed to be like.

Dr. Leiken's final sentence is a beautifully phrased and mildly administered rebuke to those who would write polemics and call them factual analyses. It is as follows:

For a musician who has spent the better half of his life either intoxicated or on a drug high, Kiedis, the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has produced a surprisingly detailed account of his life. Raised in the 1960s and '70s by a drug dealer father who first introduced his preteen son to drugs by mashing them into bananas, the high school delinquent and UCLA dropout seemed destined for a life of rabble-rousing until his high school band—cofounded by close friends Michael "Flea" Balzary and Hillel Slovak—took off and became one of the most popular groups of the 1990s. Though he peppers his book with little known facts (for instance, the author narrowly missed being named Clark Gable Kiedis), the punk-funk rocker dedicates too few pages to his introspective music-writing process and too many to his incessant drug use and revolving door of girlfriends (which included actress Ione Skye, singer Sinéad O'Connor and director Sofia Coppola). But while Kiedis fails to scratch beneath the surface of his fast-lane life, his frankness is moving, especially toward the end of the book, when his mea culpa turns into a full-blown account of recovery and redemption. (Kiedis has been sober for almost four years.) A pretty good read

I have never been the worlds biggest Red Hot Chilli Peppers fan. Sure I think they are a good band with some really good records, but I've never felt the need to drive far distances to see them live, collect all their albums or any of the other stuff usually assosated with fandom. But Anthony Keidis' autobiography "Scar Tissue" interested me for a few different reasons. One, I do enjoy they're later period softer rock music, which for my money is some of the best alterna-pop you're likely to find. Two, I thought he would have some good stories since he was around in both the early eighties hardcore punk scene and the mid-ninties alternative rock boom. And three, in interviews he comes across as a pretty cool guy.

So on those fronts I was not dissapointed by "Scar Tissue". It was a pleasant and good book, full of surprising honesty and compassion even if at times it fails to go too deep below the surface. You learn a lot about his life, but not as much about him as you might like.

Now if you're not into what I call "junkie" books then you should probably stay away from this book. A large portion of the book is devoted to Kiedis' herion addiction which I have to admit was handled about as well as I have ever read. It is a cautionary tale with the typical body count of friends and loss loves, but rather then shaking his finger at himself and those around him, he tells it honestly and doesn't try to make apoligies about his behavior any more so then he needs to. This is refreshing and good. He's saying not to use drugs mind you; he's just going to tell you how it really is.

At times the book is written with a somewhat pedestrian writting style, but for the most part I sensed it came from Kiedis and not his co-author. It has, at it's best times, a conversational vibe that makes reading it that much enjoyable.

So I really liked the book, so why do I only give it three stars? Well, because there is a drastic rating inflation on this site. To me, a five star anything means the thing is flawless, four means it's in the top of it's league but not perfect, three means it's good but I've read/ seen/ heard better, two means it bathes in it's mediocrity, and one means that it's godawful horse manure. And Kiedis' book fits the three to a T. It's a good book, I enjoyed reading it. It's not one of the best books I've ever read, nor is it one of the worst. It's a good book that I'm pretty sure if you're interested in you'll dig.

The dark side of drugs, dark side of fame, dark side of life in the fastlane

Anyone coming for an autobiography of the Red Hot Chili Peppers might be a little disappointed in this book. Kiedis focuses more on his personal journey through life, and especially on his formative adolescent years. The Chili Peppers are a part of his life, to be sure, but this story is truly Anthony's personal struggles to be a sober, straight-living man.

Anthony spends a significant amount of the book on his teenaged years. He was essentially his father's roommate (not his son, not his "charge) in Los Angeles from the age of 12. He experienced more drugs and debauchery before the age of 18 than most people could live through in their entire life. In describing his experiences, however, Kiedis used an inviting tone; he never bragged about his exploits or tried to paint himself in an excessively rosy light. He simply invited the reader along to explore his personal experiences and emotions.

Scar Tissue is truly a book about drug addiction, about the lifelong slippery slope of trying to obtain (and maintain) sobriety. It is amazing that Kiedis can keep his dozens of periods of abuse and relapse straight in his mind, much less transform them into a compelling narrative journey for the reader. Life on drugs was in no way glamorous--Kiedis spent many years at rock bottom, barely surviving, and scrounging for his existence. He also fooled many people about his drug use, and managed to escape any arrest or scrutiny for possession. Reading about how Kiedis has to consider and seize his sobriety each and every day (he's been clean since 24 December 2000) will surely inspire anyone who is struggling with their own personal demons.

It's amazing that the Chili Peppers have been as successful as they are, considering their poor record management in the early days, the excessive personnel changes, and the rampant drug abuse. I'd love to read a tell-all from Flea next!

Who Knew???

I've read a lot of rock star bios and this one sticks. Why? Kiedis's unflinching honesty, graphic depiction of a life lived without structure and the fact that he has lived to tell the tale. It's all here. The drugs, the booze, the sex, the debauchery. So what, you might ask, is so unusual about that? Don't all rock star bios share these elements? Yeah, most of them do. But the difference here is Anthony Kiedis's story is a bloodletting without being preachy and full of predictable fluff. He never judges, he never steps up to the pulpit and warns the world. He never shoves 12 step sensibilities down anyones' throat. He tells his tale with charm, kid bravado and, surprisingly, humility. He admits his faults. He admits his immaturity. Through every chapter we watch him grow. He takes two steps forward, then ten steps back. Then he takes five steps forward and two steps back.

What I particularly found refreshing was the stories Kiedis tells about his inspirations for many Chili Pepper songs. Here is a man who cared (s) about the finished product. (If you doubt that, check out their latest effort, Stadium Arcadium. It's a masterpiece.)

You want to cry with Kiedis and you want to laugh with him during the entire bumpy ride. And I personally was wondering how his father was able to take a series of pictures of his eight year old son smoking pot without the folks over at the Fotomat running interference when he took them to be developed. Unless, of course, they were Polaroids. Then that point is moot I guess. Nevertheless, I hated his dad for the things he exposed Anthony to at such an early age. We're lucky Kiedis turned out as good as he did in the end.

Nevertheless, this is a rock star bio worth the effort. It's long, it's detailed, yes. Some details come off as too much information. But still, it's never a boring read. No fluff, no filler. Just a cautionary tale told with the best of intentions. And if he had to name his bio after a Pepper's song, Scar Tissue was the perfect choice.

Interesting old stories

This is a nice collection of stories. There is a degree of torment & depression in many of the tales, but you just need to think about the era when they were written & appreciate how our lives have changed. It's hard to think about reading these to our young children. I prefer more up-beat stories with happy endings. He is a cherished author of yesteryear. Just as everyone should read Dickens for the historical value, everyone should read these stories just the same.

Thoroughly fulfilling book

What a surprisingly fulfilling book. I have to admit I was a bit put off by the author's cheesy pen name but I'm glad I didn't let that stop me from purchasing it.
I really prefer reviews that focus more on what the book made me feel but I'll give a brief summary of the plot: Shendar is a wealthy and peaceful kingdom. It's unusual in that the heirs are always from the women's line, ensuring the kingdom stays within the family. Queen Shian is merely fourteen, so her older brother, Prince Cray, acts as regent until she is of age. Unfortunately, a natural disaster has prompted a warrior tribe into trying to invade Shendar. Therefore it is decided to seek aid from the strong, neighboring kingdom. That kingdom's heir, Prince Reston, along with his brother, Revi, come for negotiations. It appears that they are amenable to lending aid if their countries become bound by a marriage contract. With little options, Shian and Cray agree but Cray believes his sister is too young to share a marriage bed. However, Reston says he'll honor their contract if Cray would act as substitute.
This book richly explored the emotional, political and personal ramifications such a choice would involve. It was also interesting to see the delicate balance Cray had to keep in order to satisfy his duty to his people, his sister and himself. Despite that focus, the aspect of war wasn't overlooked or forgotten and a darker secret that Reston nursed was always hinted at which was intriguing but not distressing because I never doubted Reston's sincerity once.
A really enjoyable read. It was never boring but neither was it outrageously thrilling but rather steadily and thoroughly enjoyable. That may not seem too complimentary but it is. Sometimes, I just want to read a book that I know with absolute certainty will end well for everyone and doesn't send me hurdling through a whirlwind of emotions. Very pleasing.

Can't wait for another one...

This was a very good book, from start to finish. The characters were interesting, and the plot was engaging, and the author's writing style really made their world come alive. I thoroughly enjoyed the developing relationship between Reston and Cray, but I also enjoyed seeing Shian's growth throughout the book, and how she learned from her experiences. The sex was hot but definitely did not overwhelm the story, as I often find is the case in the m/m genre. All in all, a great book from a very promising author, and well worth purchasing. I would really enjoy more books set in this world, but until then this one will definitely be on my list to re-read.

Disappointing book after enthusiastically reading THE WIZARD of BRIGHT ISLE SERIES and THE FALL OF THE DRAGON KING

Is this the same author who wrote these other works? The plot basically revolves around the bed scenes by our two main characters. Everything else appears secondary to the story. Come on now, must I really endure at least six occasions of detailed love making? Personally, I'm reading m/m novels for a different take on a story but not for excessive eroticism. BTW, get this one. We have one guy never having sex with either gender who accepts the receptive role . He never voices an interest in taking a dominant position. Is this for real?

Now, listen up. The premise is our prince takes the place of his sister due to her age in the conjugal bed. The last time I heard during the middle ages or ancient kingdoms of the past young ladies(age 14 or younger) took partners due to a shorter life span.

Historical inaccuracies, stereotyping same sex behavior and a dull tale does not promote recommending this book. The ending seemed unfinished when the Queen and her brother are insulted by one of their advisors without any retribution or comments. It's as if the author lost the train of thought. Let's see. We have a higher price, less pages and a poorly written story.

Excellent overview of systems forensics investigations

This book is an excellent overview of the field of system/digital forensics, however it lacks many of the details needed to perform digital forensics investigations including examining email messages and email tracing, and data hiding. The chapter entitled Trends and Future Directions is an excellent overview of new trends and directions for digital forensics including cloud computing and the changing legal environment. This book was used as a textbook for my 400 level Systems Forensics course and I ended up using another computer forensics textbook (Guide to Computer Forensics and Investigations, written by Nelson, Phillips, Steuart) to adequately participate in class discussions and to prepare written assignments. I do recommend this book as a very good overview of the subject, however, as a textbook, it lacks many necessary details. As with my previous experiences with Amazon, the shipping was fast and the book arrived in excellent condition.
