About the Author

Darren Wilkinson is Professor of Stochastic Modelling at Newcastle University in the UK. He was educated at the nearby University of Durham, where he took his first degree in Mathematics, followed by a Ph.D. in Bayesian statistics which he completed in 1995. He moved to a lectureship in statistics at the Newcastle University in 1996, where he has remained since, being promoted to his current post in 2007. Professor Wilkinson is interested in computational statistics and Bayesian inference and in the application of modern statistical technology to problems in statistical bioinformatics and systems biology. He is involved in a variety of systems biology projects at Newcastle, including the Centre for Integrated Systems Biology of Ageing and Nutrition (CISBAN). He recently held a BBSRC Research Development Fellowship on Integrative modelling of stochasticity, noise, heterogeneity and measurement error in the study of model biological systems.

Correct title: Stochastic modeling of biological systems

This is one of several recent books with system biology in the title, but first book with emphasis on statistics and stochastic approach. The book discusses some simple math models for biological systems, mostly biochemical models. Main focus is on statistical issues in differentail modeling, those as discussed in the nice Bower and Bolouri (2000) book Computational Modeling of Genetic and Biochemical Networks (Computational Molecular Biology), and the strong point is the use of Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo method for stochastic modeling. Weakness is that, the systems considered are too low-dimensional, and there is a long way toward real system biology issues, which will likely be much more complex, and involve potentially many high-dimensional interactions. Overall, it is simply a very straightforward introductory book, lacks depth and breadth. However, it should serve as a good starting point for people who want to learn something about stat and probabilistic methods relevant to bios system modelling.

About the Author
Maurizio Ferraris is Full Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Laboratory for Ontology at the University of Turin, Italy. His books include Goodbye, Kant! What Still Stands of the Critique of Pure Reason, also published by SUNY Press. Sarah De Sanctis is a PhD candidate in contemporary forms of realism in literature and philosophy at the London Graduate School and a translator for the Department of Philosophy at the University of Turin.

Fun, but incomplete

A lot of fun. Quick reading, full of great art. But there are some puzzling things... and "Things" is one of them! No "THING" here! The other three members of the Fantastic Four are here, but of all of them The Thing has participated most in the Avengers... and he's the one missing.

And not to argue over "powers" like a school boy, but Hawkeye's fightng skills are listed at 7. That put's him in the Captain America, Wolverine, Shang Chi area. A better fighter than Iron Fist, Black Panther... and more. Really?

But again, a fun read. Good for new and old readers.

Incomplete Character Guide

I purchased this book for kicks being a Marvel comics fan and was let down by the fact that they left out some fairly popular villains. How could you forget Modok??? Seriously?
Aside from that, the book is in full color and pretty cool if you are curious about the Avengers, especially with the Avengers movie coming in 2012.

Quality of book - well-made, good binding, nice thick pages and glossy hard cover. Can stand wear and tear of younger child

Characters - good consolidation of Avenger's universe... nice quick info on each character (easy enough for a kid to read)

Content: Warning - not appropriate for young children - publishers chose some fairly revealing shots for the female characters... too detailed on the female anatomy and the angles at which they are portrayed. Could have toned down the breast sizes about 4 cups and covered up the cleavage/skin some more and it would have been a great book for a kid. I don't want my son looking at pictures like that in our house.

A must for all gun owners

I discovered Jon's book while it was in the 7th edition so I will compare this book to the 7th edition.

Before I purchased the 7th edition I thought the book was expensive, after reading it I thought the 8th edition was a huge bargain. The knowledge you gain is a bargain at three times the price. Jon is an attorney and his 40+ years of experience is priceless, Florida is very lucky to have him and his books.

Not knowing gun laws is like trying to drive to a new destination without a map or GPS. The 7th edition was extremely informative and I really enjoyed reading it. I expected the 8th edition to merely be an update, but it expanded and a much better read as well. I would grade the 7the edition as A and the 8th edition as A+.

I went to my FFL to pick up a Mossberg 12 gauge with a pistol grip, he told me there would be a 3 day waiting period unless I had my CCW, which I do. The FFL said the law did not make sense, but that was the way it was. The 8th edition fully explains this and many other things. Want to carry or transport a gun in your car legally? Want to mail a gun legally? Want to stay out of jail?

This book is excellent for all these and so much more.

Did you know the book is updated FREE on the web two or more times yearly?

As the author I am often blown away by the fact that folks don't know the book is updated for FREE on my website at least twice yearly, and usually more. You can either read the update, or download it from the link on the homepage in either pdf or Word -- so that everytime a law changes, is added, or something important happens -- it will hit my blog within two weeks, and be integrated into the free update within usually four weeks. I was the first author to do that, and to my knowledge -- I'm still the only one out there regularly doing that. Because laws, regulations, and case law change so often -- it really is critical for folks who want to keep out of trouble to check up on the website a few times yearly. It's free! Likewise, you should know that every time the book is reprinted, prior updates are incorporated into the print version -- which is why the free updates are cumulative. New editions come out about every four years -- and when they do -- the older edition is still supported in updates for an additional 18 months, although a new edition means there were major changes, and your book really should be replaced if you want to be current. I strive to make this book the showcase for all others of its kind -- and freely answer email questions to my website on legal and firearm issues -- with the understanding that you've "read the book" before you do so. I want this book to continue to be the undisputed leader in its field -- and continue to earn the respect of instructors, courts, and law enforcement both Florida and Federal. A must have for every Florida gun owner

This book translates into plain English everything that you need to know to be in compliance with the law. I especially appreciate the addition of basic information for neighboring states.

I only wish that there was an Ebook version that I could have on the Kindle app on my phone with my highlights and annotations easily accessible for reference without having to carry the 300+ page paperback around.

Absolutely the best book I've found

Absolutely the best book I've found. I've been on a iOS development, Swift, Xcode and Coacoa book buying frenzy for the last 3 weeks. This is absolutely the best book I've found. I've taught engineering and computer science at a university level and at many conferences for many years. II've never found explanations so concise and clear. I love this book! Buy it if this is the only book you buy! Many of the book are out of date and the sample code doesn't compile. I skipped busy this book because I was no reviews. BIG MISTAKE! It's brand new! So it's complexly up to date on everything!

I bought Neil Smyth's iPhone iOS 6 Development Essentials some years ago and found it a valuable reference. Now iOS 10 App Development Essentials is proving to be equally useful. I appreciate that it includes not code snippets, but instead small programs that are substantial enough to compile and run. And unlike some publications, the code in this book is, so far, free of both typographical and logical errors. This book covers a wide range of topics, but I bought it specifically for the information on UIKit Dynamics and SpriteKit. The author proceeds through those topics methodically and clearly. I could wish that he had covered radial gravity fields and also SceneKit but the book already exceeds 800 pages so I understand why he did not.
