Marc Delisle

Marc Delisle was awarded "MySQL Community Member of the year 2009" because of his involvement with phpMyAdmin. He started to contribute to the project in December 1998, when he made the multi-language version. He is still involved with phpMyAdmin as a developer and project administrator.

Marc is a system administrator at Cegep de Sherbrooke, Québec, Canada. He has been teaching networking, security, and web application development. In one of his classes, he was pleased to meet a phpMyAdmin user from Argentina. Marc lives in Sherbrooke with his wife and they enjoy spending time with their four children.

Great easy reading book!!!!

After seeing "Beaches" and reading it, it only came to reason to read the sequel. And, boy, was it good!!! Anyone who saw the movie has to read the books!!!! They will make you laugh and cry, and you can just picture Cee Cee standing on the beach, hands on her hips with a nasty look on her face! Trust me, you pick one of these books up, you'll read it from start to finish!

I thought that I'll Be There was an exelent book. It made me laugh and cry, as well as feel emotions that I have never felt before. The book was easy to read. In my view, Dr. Helen Shields' strongest credentials for writing this book is that she has won more teaching awards than anyone on the entire Harvard Medical School faculty, I believe. Moreover, she has won THE prestigious faculty teaching award, that is, elected by the medical school faculty as an outstanding teacher on two occasions.

Even though I've been in academic medicine one way or the other; that is, as student or teacher for a total of no less than 56 years, I found this book delightfully informative and extremely useful.

The bibliography is well selected and quite comprehensive. The attention to detail and the specific valuable "cookbook" guidelines are inordinately useful. I took the book on vacation to look up a few specific items that I was curious about and I was attracted to other units of the book and before I realized it, I had read it in its entirety.

The practical advice, the thoughtful and often referenced recommendations and analyses are of tremendous value.

I believe it's valuable for students, as well as, young, middle, and senior people in the medical academic career track. It's also useful for anyone teaching in any medical setting.

I trust that others will gain as much from it as I have. I have purchased several copies to share with friends and colleagues involved with medical education.

One of the better med educ fac dev books I've purchased

I have read several medical teacher books either for my own development or in preparation for faculty development of colleagues. This book is a great balance of straight forward suggestions that can be readily applied (in classroom, rounds, morning report, conference presentation) and a succinct overview of the theory and research supporting various approaches (e.g., team based learning - how to do it and what kind of outcomes you can expect based on published studies).

While some sections or examples are more relevant to medical educators, I can see manual being very useful and acceptable to all health profession educators.

The chapters are quick reads so busy new faculty can get benefit in short time. And if they want more, the author often cites additional resources.

I have not reviewed books before but thought this one is worth others considering.

A Good Edwards book, but definitely no the best

I enjoyed this book, but I can honestly say that it is not as good as Gene's earlier title The Divine Romance. The depiction of Christ on the cross in The Divine Romance is much more gripping and edgy. While reading The Day I was Crucified, I felt like Gene was in a hurry to get Christ to the cross. Gene's other writings are notoriously more patient in delivery, and hence more dramatic. This book had the feel of being in a extreme hurry to get to the end.
I would also like to throw in my two cents on several of the statements used here on Amazon in the above description of the book. I think they are a bit grandiose. I quote "The Day I Was Crucified stands out as literary excellence apart from virtually any books known in the modern era." That is a bit of an extreme statement to make from a book that is brand new on the market. Only time will tell this. Another "There has never been a more stunning, more heart-touching piece of Christian literature to be found in the English language as is The Day I Was Crucified." Who is writing this? This is rather self promoting if you ask me.
Is it a good book? YES, but is it an instant classic? Hardly! As I said above, if you want to read a more dramatic depiction of Christ on the cross, read The Divine Romance by Edwards. It is a much more powerful depiction.

Now, It's the Best Out There and Mandatory

I have taught introductory writing and literature courses for decades now. "Literature and the Writing Process", through its many incarnations, has always been a very good textbook. I was expecting the same calibre when I heard a 9th edition was coming out. When I received my instructor's copy, however, I was pleasantly surprised by the several updates. My one complaint about the book previously was that I felt that McMahan, et al. should lighten it up. What I mean by that was that the book, like others, was fairly humorless. With the new section on satire, parody and light verse, I have been relieved of the duty of photocopying samples of this style and genre. I am even considering using this as a supplemental text for my Humor and Literature class. Good work, guys!

I was surprised and pleased to learn that there was so much packed into this book! Complete poems, short stories, plays, and lots of short biographies about the writers of the works within the book. My only complaint is that the text is very small and sometimes hard to read.

Good text book. Fine examples of literature, insightful questions and analysis with sound explanations on improving writing skills. Makes a good reference book for those going on to Master's and Ph.D. programs where good writing skills are an absolute essential.

A Fresh New Look at Survival

It's about time I pick up a book that has more than a list of survival skills. In fact, this book doesn't make any attempt to teach you how to trap animals or construct log furniture in the wilderness. Instead, you learn how to idetify potential survival situations and avoid getting into them if possible. If you do, backcountry knowledge will be helpful but it will be even better if you know how to take care of the basics such as controling fear and focusing on keeping your body at a comfy 98.6 degrees. I absolutely loved this book. There is discussion of psychology, biology, and physiology, all in a basic easy to understand format. Lundin's writing style is as if he were there talking to you. One of my personal favorites of the book is the chapter on survival kits, complete with color photographs. I thought I had a pretty good kit but after reading this, I need to make a few changes. If you spend any time in the world, anywhere, I recommend this book. If you want to know how to build monster solar stills, trap wild animals, and spear fish, look elsewhere. This book rocks!

Reality at its best

Excellent book on survival. I am glad someone finally divides "SURVIVAL" from "Wilderness Living Skills" I would venture to say that most people that provide bad reviews of this book are looking for texts in Wilderness Living Skills. There are other books for that. I use 98.6 for a text book in our Search and Rescue Team training. In reality most victims succumb to hypothermia in survival situations other than trying to catch fish with a shoe string and a safety pin. It is reality at its best, presented in a humorous fashion.

It kept my ass alive!

Prior to embarking on a rugged solo day hike in AZ's Superstition Wilderness, I read this book cover to cover. (I'm a middle-aged, East Coast trail hiker who hasn't hiked recently, so survival was a major consideration.) My desert day hike turned into an overnight stay on a canyon ledge far from the trailhead. Thanks to Cody Lundin's book, I maintained a "party on" attitude, was fully prepared (both with equipment and mentally), and spent a fabulous night watching the stars. The right attitude is everything! Enjoyed the humor and common sense approach of his writing. His examples stick with you when you need them. Great tips on putting together a practical, personal survival kit that will work anywhere. There's now one in my pack and one in my car. Lots of useful information on how to overcome fear and keep your head.
