About the Author

Simon Bolton became a modeller as soon as he was old enough to follow the step-by-step guides in his father's railway modelling magazines. He was inspired to start scratch-building after reading stories about wonderful Great Western locomotives, many of which were not available as models in kit form. Moved to build models of his own, he acquired the necessary skills from journals, railway modelling club members and by trial and error. Now an accomplished modeller, Simon has published articles in the model railway press and society journals, his locomootives have appeared at the Gauge O Guild Annual Exhibition, and he has been an active layout operator and skills demonstrator for the Model Railway Club.

Good, but could be better

An excellent source of information and tips for some one like my self (a total novice). The only short comming is as with all books of this type, not enough info on where and how to obtain cheap materials. I'm sorry but spending $400.00 on a kit shuts me out.

Good basic information on building a brass model railway locomotive.

Five stars here with a caveat--this is a very basic book on the subject. It is not necessarily reflective of the scratch-building realities facing model railroaders seeking to build replicas of north American steam locomotives. Steam locomotives on this continent, as a rule, were much larger and contained far more exposed complicated appliances and piping than their smaller "cleaner-lined" British counter-parts. That said, this book is an excellent introduction to the general building techniques common to most scratch-building projects and covers most areas of interest for the beginning modeler.

The author has a rather breezy and humorous way of writing, giving sage advice along the way about being patient, working slowly and methodically, and, if all does not go well at a particular point during the build--take a break. He points out that at times, if a process for shaping a part is going badly, stop and start over if necessary. Eventually you'll get it right and the process will be much easier the next time.

Whatever your level of skill in this area, Bolton is full of valuable tips on making the job easier and more enjoyable. The best advice he gives is to start with a smaller simpler locomotive building project, even if it is a locomotive that does not hold great interest for you at the time. Make your mistakes early and often (you will), rectify them, get comfortable with the process, have some success, and then move onto more complicated types of locomotives.

I highly recommend this book to all those interested in this archane, complicated but fascinating area of scale model building.

About the Author
Lisa A. Place began training in the martial arts in the mid 1990s, earning belts in taekwondo, kempo, American freestyle, kickboxing, jujitsu and arnis. She has extensive teaching experience in the martial arts working with adults and children. Lisa began training with Loren in 2003, and has appeared in several of his books and DVDs. She has been the principal photographer for numerous martial arts books and magazine articles. Loren W. Christensen began training in the martial arts in 1965 and continues to this day. Over the years, he has earned a total of 11 black belts, eight in karate, two in jujitsu and one in arnis. Because of his nearly three decades in law enforcement, Loren s focus in the martial arts writing, teaching and training has always been on street survival, not competition. Loren began his law enforcement career in 1967 as a Military Policeman in the Army and then joined the Portland (Oregon) Police Bureau an 1972, retiring in 1997. During his years on PPB, he worked street patrol, child abuse investigation, dignitary protection, Intelligence, street gangs, and as a defensive tactics instructor. As a professional writer since 1978, Loren has penned over 45 published books with five publishers, dozens of magazine articles, and edited a police newspaper for nearly eight years. He has written on the martial arts, missing children, street gangs, school shootings, workplace violence, police-involved shootings, nutrition, exercise, prostitution, and various street subcultures. Loren has starred in seven martial arts training videos. From 2007 through 2008, Loren was included in the Heritage Registry of Who's Who for his accomplishments in publishing.

Practical, offers much good advice

Loren Christensen and Lisa Place have written a very practical book that motivates the reader to attain the aggressive mindset needed to use techniques powerful enough to stop an attacker and survive a violent physical encounter. When your life or safety is in danger, the encounter should be ended as quickly as possible. It is not a wrestling match, nor a demonstration of the prettiest footwork or the most complex and awe-inspiring martial arts techniques. The first half of this book teaches you how a violent situation is likely to start and unfold, and provides numerous examples of simple yet effective options for neutralizing the attacker.

Attacks are generally preplanned at least to some degree, and an attacker seldom if ever "comes out of nowhere." The first principle of successful self-defense is awareness and the ability to identify emotions that communicate that you are in danger. I found the many tips on how to deescalate a situation verbally before it becomes physically abusive particularly valuable.

If deescalation does not work, the next principle is to understand that only aggressive offense will save the day when the attacker is intent on harming you. The authors give practical advice on what to do when taken by surprise, surrounded, or cornered in a variety of environments. A great strength of this book is the emphasis on using natural movements that are often intuitive, such as a stomp or hammer fist strike, and therefore don't require years of martial arts training. The authors demonstrate how to apply these techniques from many different positions such as standing, supine, kneeling, when pinned against a wall, or when in retreat and unable to use body weight and momentum. The idea is not merely to break free and escape, but to render the aggressor incapable of pursuing you. Many of the photos are taken from a frontal angle that gives you a good visual of how fierce you can look when you adopt the aggressive mindset.

The second half of the book focuses on how to train your body and mind to reach proficiency with the techniques. Fear protects you from danger, but it can also have negative effects by making you cower in inaction. The authors' idea of "unfreezing" you by creating a plan of action through the "when-then" scenarios is very good advice. However, I particularly enjoyed the section on the many weapons one can find in the environment and the "You know what really hurts? game." As an employee of Delta Air Lines for 26 years, I couldn't help but seeing the many wonderful ways in which you might play this game with the underwear or shoe bomber in the seat next to you onboard an airplane.

No martial art, system of self-defense, or technique guarantees success, but this book will give you a very good start and a solid foundation for understanding your options in a situation that has or is about to turn physically violent. I recommend it!

GREAT advice!!

Fight Back: A woman's Guide to Self-defense that Works is jam packed with great bits of information. It discusses the physical side to fighting back, of course, but it has what many books lack - the emotional and psycological side. It has great techniques that women with little to no self-defense background will find incredibly useful and practical, and also techniques that women with a lot of self-defense training can learn from. It is packed with photos which make learning the techniques easy to follow. The size of the book is really nice, too (8 1/2 x 11) which makes it easy to hold and flip through. Another great book by Loren W. Christensen, and Lisa Place adds excellent perspective and advice that she draws upon from her years of experience. I highly recommend Fight Back!

Amazing!

There are many books that claim to teach effective self defense, with few actually being able to deliver on the promise. This is not one of those books. It is, quite simply, one of the best self-defense books for women on the market. An absolute must have. I honestly believe this book will save lives.

A cooler way to travel

I loved this book. After reading it I took a trip to Mexico and couch surfed with some wonderful people. I also gave the book away to a young woman with hopeful dreams of travelling the world. Perhaps she now knows a cooler way to travel that also happens to save you a couple dollars.

An Interesting Tale of Sleeping on Strangers Couches Around the World

I found this book hard to put down. It is hard to explain why, nothing out of the ordinary happens, there's no big disasters happening to the narrator as he travels or anything, the book isn't a humorous tale like Danny Wallace or Dave Gorman's books nor is there a really weird excuse for travelling like trying to win a bet or something. I guess the reason you can't put this down is the narrator (author) seems like a really nice guy, someone you wouldn't mind sleeping on your own couch, and the conversational style of writing is just, really, really good. This was the first of Thacker's books I read but I have since read his previous stuff which like this book, for some reason you just can't put them down.

This book is basically about a Melbourne guy who joins up with a few websites where members offer their couch (or a spare bed or something) for strangers from around the world to sleep for free (although some do have ulterior motives for making money from the couchee). I've backpacked Europe but never couched around the world and I found it quite fascinating. I don't know that it's a cheaper option if like the author you feel uncomfortable not doing something like buying them dinner in return for their hospitality which I probably would as well. Brian Thacker stays on a number of "couches" on an around the world airline ticket journey in North America, South America, Asia and Europe. You'll learn a bit about each country he visits as well as a tip or two if you ever go there yourself. As I said a great easy to read sit back for half a day relax and read book.

startling, poignant, bold

Stefanie Freele belongs to a fascinating company of women writers in contemporary American literature tackling the short story and taking it to new and important places. Like Elizabeth Crane and Stacey Levine (who are building on the work of Aimee Bender), Freele addresses the strange in the every day, and bends the form of the short story, forcing it to contain the surreal, the angry, the maternal, the feminine and the immediate. The most powerful stories for me are the most specific; headliners include "Boots" and "Over the Rolling Waters we go." Other favorites are the lyrically strange pieces that ask what a story is, and invite us to consider what it can be. "Tiny Toasts served with an insufficient amount of Brie" would certainly please Flannery O'Connor, but it would also delight Baudelaire and Tristan Tzara. Smart, and sneakily intellectual, Surrounded by Water is a turbulent, intriguing ride.

Don't Miss this Collection!!

Surrounded by Water by Stefanie Freele.

Stefanie Freele’s collection, Surrounded by Water, contains stories with strong, often lyrical, language and believable, down-to-earth characters, each piece, a reading experience. It’s her women I am drawn to. They’re tough. In “Over the Rolling Waters Go,” the creeping reality of a wife and mother is juxtaposed against the peppy gung-ho spirit of her husband and his idea of family dynamic. What seems at first blush to be an innocent virtue turns out to be bullying very quickly. The suspense builds and…I won’t talk about the ending.

Another mother, in the short but totally satisfying, “If the Unsuitable Neighbor Smells Snow,” shows her own fierce determination.
“A Bunch of Cash Landed my Way” brings us humorous wishful thinking and “The Problem of Pillows” illustrates Ms. Freele’s deft touch at dialogue. For example, when a student runs into professor with the instincts of a sybil.

Excerpt:

“You again,” she [the professor] says without glancing my way. “You’re not locked in the Bermuda Triangle.” This is stated like a professorial fact, one she may test me on next Tuesday.

I check my person and confirm I’m not locked anywhere; but as always, I’m intrigued by mention of the Bermuda Triangle, a place you may enter, but gamble on an exit. I respond, “I’m free to come and go.”

The professor predicts the student will need a new pillow and because the prof has been right in the past, and the old pillow is one of “procrastination,” the student runs out and buys a new one, “a down one, filled with pluckings from once-warm bodies.” One of my favorite lines in the story is “All of my unfinished business lies upon that pillow, snuggles along its two-hundred thread count loveliness.” Wonderful combination of image and meaning and this kind of language can be found throughout.

And then there is “While Surrounded by Water,” for which the collection has been named. I’m tempted to call it a “flash novel” because though it is the length of a short story, the content is as gratifying as a much longer work with characters in crisis coming to grips with who they are. Once again there is a strong, tough woman at its center, one who is underappreciated but full of life and determination. This seems to be a theme in Ms. Freele’s work. Quiet triumphs over what life dishes out.

More than a writer to watch: A Writer to Read!

Full disclosure: Stefanie Freele was my student, and writing teachers are, for better or worse, said to have a professional interest in the success of their students. So let me say up front that I can take little credit for Stefanie's success. And very successful she is, as success is measured on the page.

Stefanie Freele is a terrific writer. Her stories are funny, surprising, poignant when you least expect it, and true even at their most exaggerated. Her books (this is her second) are literary gems. If you like fiction that packs a lot of story into a very few pages, if you enjoy the likes of Ray Vukcevich or Lydia Davis, if you wonder what Italo Calvino would have been like as an American woman raising a family, then this book deserves your attention.

At this stage of a young writer's career, someone is liable to say something like, "Stefanie Freele is a writer to watch!" That usually means that the reviewer expects better work ahead. While acknowledging that any writer is liable to get better over the course of a career, Freele isn't a writer to watch so much as a writer to read right now. Don't wait. Start reading her now.
