I Love This Book!

I was at a conference where James Durham was one of the speakers. He talked about this book, but he was all sold out. I love this book because he tells you how to get there. Reading about his encounters with the Lord and how he believes that we can have the same encounters. I have been using this book as a devotional. Reading daily and praying over what he shares. I'm believing for GOD encounters as well. If your a christian and you want a intimate relationship with The Lord, take this book, pray and believe for your heavenly experiences. This is a hands on book of how to get into that heavenly realm. This book is AWESOME!!!! It's changing my life!

100 Days in Heaven

This is a very thought provoking book. It is full of insights gained from the authors visions and personal interactions in the heavenly realm. The author then follows up his revelations using scripture and his own understanding of what the Lord is speaking. It is well worth the read but won't be one that is read cover to cover without stopping. It should be read a few pages at a time with the reader taking time for reflection and meditation between readings.

Seven years ago, Lara Church was the Seattle Strangler’s seventh victim, but she survived. Barely. Recalling none of the events, she’s been on the run to distance herself from a homicidal maniac she can’t identify: “For seven years, Lara had lived a gypsy’s life. Fear of settling had kept her moving from town to town.”
Inheriting her grandmother’s house near Austin, where she spent childhood summers, Lara now teaches photography classes. And she has a gruesome hobby: photographing recent murder landscape scenes with a 150-year-old bellows camera. At a kill site, Lara encounters Detective James Beck, who suspects Lara may have altered a crime scene that has the strangler’s M.O. Lara resents Beck’s arrogance, but she notices his “six-foot-six frame coupled with broad shoulders and a lean, muscled body. This close, the restrained power in his body made her skin tingle.”
Now there are startlingly similar homicides in Austin. Are they by a copycat killer? But how could someone in Texas know about an undisclosed specific coin left with each Seattle victim, and where Lara now lives? Those details bring Seattle cop Mike Raines to the Lone Star State. Texas testosterone, however, blurs a thin blue line when Beck muscles Mike out of the jurisdictional picture. There is a truckload of characters, some with motive to continue the Seattle Strangler’s legacy. But does the Texas Ranger with a questionable job suspension and white hat also wear a dark one?
A posh studio, Gallery 101, features Lara’s photographic art, and a newspaper reporter mentions she was the only Seattle victim to survive. The reporter ties in recent local murders. Everyone in Austin knows her identity --- and her past. Now, several homicides occur, each body after death is dressed in white and found clutching a 1983 penny. And each kill site creeps closer to Lara’s remote ranch. A scurrilous person drugs her protection dog Lincoln, threatening notes appear on her truck’s windshield at the university where she teaches, and someone slashes her tires. The Texas Rangers know that Lara is the target’s bullseye, but she refuses to go into hiding: “I don’t want to be a victim ever again. So I’ve learned to take care of myself.”
True to the Romantic Suspense genre, Lara Church allows feelings absent for seven years to rekindle, though there is far more suspense than romance. Myriad character points of view detract, but readers are able to get into the minds of murderers and victims, as well as those of the dual protagonists. THE SEVENTH VICTIM is a thrill-a-minute rollercoaster ride with curlicue plot twists and a breathtaking sudden-stop conclusion.

Let's play...name the cliche!

Let me tell you a little story about this book. I accidentally requested to get an ARC. I thought that the author was a different author whom I have read and enjoyed before and I jumped out of my chair in joy at thinking she had a new book. After I realized that I was mistaken about who the author was, I ended up not caring too much because the story still sounded really fantastic. Oh, how I was wrong! Despite having an excellent cover and an astounding synopsis, this book was just a mess. I bring you, bullet points!

~Predictable plot is predictable. By the second or third time we have the killer introduced into a scene, I knew who it was. It was so painfully obvious that it was...well painful. Also, by about the halfway point I had figured out what the twist was and by 70% I knew who the twist would revolve around. I don't know whether to credit my obsession with the TV show Criminal Minds for this or maybe the plot was just that obvious and unimaginative.
~Stubborn heroine who insists on protecting herself but seems to be incapable of doing so. Every time we talked to Lara she was insisting that she could take care of herself, but them proceeds to do completely idiotic things that seem to suggest otherwise. For example, going to a recent crime scene when it is nearly dark outside...by yourself...with just a camera...and a shotgun (that she left in a locked car). I mean, what good is a shotgun going to do you if it's locked in your car 20 yards away? I'm pretty sure an assailant isn't going to allow you to run 20 yards to the car, unlock the car, get the shotgun, load the shotgun, and then shoot him. She has a darkroom and leaves it unlocked while she is in there with her back to the door and in the dark. And then she ignores her dog when he starts barking at something from outside. Gee, that sounds smart! And don't get your hopes up that the other female characters are any smarter, they aren't. One notable moment is when one girl gets a flat tire, on an abandoned road at night, without cell phone service, hasn't seen another sign of human life in at least a half hour, but is ever so grateful at the person who has been following her the whole time for offering his help! I sincerely hope that there are not that many stupid women in the world.
~Cops who are either oblivious or inept. Anyone who has watched Law & Order knows that when a person is attacked, most of the time the attacker is someone they know. Yet, these cops mostly seem to sit around wondering which unknown stranger it could be without even bothering to look at people close to Lara. Their justification is, well it's a serial killer so he probably doesn't know the victims. That doesn't hold water either. Criminal Minds has taught me that serial killers have their distinct signatures because the actions satisfy some need or fantasy they have. If a serial killer does not rape his victims and then suddenly a similar crime appears with a rape, it's not the same guy. If a serial killer is going after prostitutes and homeless woman, and suddenly it's a young blonde college student who was a big risk then it's not the same guy! But all of this is overlooked too, despite the claim that a FBI profiler was advising them. Really? He must be inept too!
~Lame romance. It was very cliche for the head cop to fall for Lara. And I just didn't feel it. I knew that they had feelings for each other because the author told me they did, but that's the only reason. Their actual actions and words didn't lead me to that conclusion at all. Then they decide to have sex after the most traumatic and violent scene in the whole book? What? Nearly getting killed is an aphrodisiac for Lara? Yeah that was weird and made me feel like I needed a shower with bleach. Oh and let's throw in another cliche, simultaneous orgasms. Has this honestly ever happened to anyone in real life? It's never happened to me! The sex scene made me laugh though. In one paragraph Lara removed his pants and then on the next page she was undoing the button on his pants...when did he put them back on? *snicker*
~Name a cliche, any cliche! Any cliche you can think of for a murder mystery/suspense/thriller and this book probably had it. Surviving victim becomes the obsession of the killer. Obsessed cop who couldn't let this case go and is now sticking his nose into the current case. Lead cop falling for the poor surviving victim. Female characters with no sense of self preservation. The miraculous "ah ha!" moment that answers all of the questions surrounding the case just pages before the end. The police miraculously bursting in the door just in time to save the poor female victim with a few well placed bullets that never miss. I could name more but I think you get the idea.
~Suspense? Where? This was supposedly a suspense novel, but I never once felt that rush in my veins that suspense novels usually give me. Mostly I just got bored. I started mentally counting cliches in my head and coming up with a scorecard for how well I predicted the book's plot. There was no suspense, I knew exactly what would happen chapters before it actually happened.

So, there we have it. If you want to read a serial killer novel that is exactly like thousands of other serial killer novels then this is a book for you. If you've never read a serial killer novel then this is perfect since you won't have a clue about how cliche it is! But otherwise, give this one a pass unless you're suffering from insomnia...because then it might help.

just so-so

The story was good, if a little predictable. But what really caused me to give it only 2 stars were the two main characters. I found it difficult to like either one of them, especially the heroine with her "I can take care of myself" attitude. This, despite the fact that she is attacked, her dog is attacked and there is a murderer in the area. The hero was just as annoying and, frankly, a bit of a jerk toward her for most of the book. The sudden connection between them was completely unbelievable.

So sweet

I enjoyed this book so much I read it in one setting. I felt Kevin was savvy enough to run an empire so he couldn't possibly be knocked off his feet by a by a common girl from a coffee shop, but the author was great at making things believable. I loved the chemistry between them I only wish the story was longer. I fell in love with the characters and would have loved to have learned how his father and x took the news of them being together

Rose Francis, I love it his story, blow me away what Naomi sister did, that was low. Kevin had me laughing loved that character and the way him and Naomi finally got busy, was hot, and had me wiggling around. Smoking hot great read going back for the next series. Truthfully this is one of those great stories that you read, then later reread, over and over again.

Would also make a great coffee table book too!

Quick book to go through, the first time. I'll be flipping through it quite a bit as I continue to enjoy taking photographs hoping that my skills will improve enough for me to be happy with the memories I capture as I fumble through life. Dave's pictures on Facebook have always impressed me and the ones collected in this book do the same. The icons added to the images are brilliant. He also shoots with Sony, giving me hope that I have a chance to accidentally figure some of this stuff out and replicate it without having to move to one of the other vendors. It's amazing what he can do with images "...essentially straight from the camera , with little or no color adjustments."

I wish some of the exif info was also posted on the photos, in a very small space near a corner =)

This book has essentially every mathematical tool an aspiring economist needs. They go through basic single and multivariable calculus, integral calculus, differential and difference equations, optimal control, dynamic programming, and some additional topics in analysis and topology. The book is more detailed than Simon and Blume and is more rigorous than Chiang, Klein, or SandB. Additionally, the authors provide an extensive solution manual in the back of the book, as well as, a more answers on the website. Bravo.

Your students will own Shakespeare!

I've been using this series for the last seven years and have found it works with almost any age group from Junior High to High School (The lessons could really be adapted for any age). Students are up on their feet, analyzing material, making decisions, having a blast. I read some of the lessons thinking, "No way will my kids go for this." When I challenged myself to try them, they were extremely successful. Shakespeare was never meant to be read sitting still. There are lessons that appear drama based, but these are plays people! (Take this from someone who is not comfortable acting - this is worth the risk.) In order to act out a scene or show subtext, students have to be able to analyze the text and understand it. These lessons guide them through every step! My students felt progressively confident in their ability to understand Shakespeare without my help. On my end-of-the-year survey, 95% of my kids said the Shakespeare Unit was their favorite! At the beginning of the year, it was the unit they feared the most. Try it out!

Experience of a lifetime!

That's what my students told me after I used this book's unit for teaching "A Midsummer Night's Dream" through performance. That was last spring, and I'm about to use it again. "Yes, we've heard all about that!" exclaimed my current Advanced English 11 students with grins and excited anticipation. Even the shy find their niche in this gently encouraging format for understanding and interpreting Shakespeare. I plan to use many of the book's ideas for our upcoming Macbeth unit as well. I am incredibly grateful for this wonderful book! If you are a teacher who wants to avoid the "Play the tape - read along" method of teaching Shakespeare, BUY THIS BOOK!

Note added May 13, 2005: Having used this a second time with my Advanced English 11, I can say that it was MORE successful, they ADORED it, and MSND performance work gave them a very deep understanding of Shakespeare which enabled them to blaze through Macbeth in three weeks - and they loved it, too! A Wonderful Resource!

I read the last review and had to respond. The reviewer stated that "this isn't drama class." I beg to differ -- a drama unit is drama, and no play is complete simply on the page without bringing it to life in some type of performance. This can be intimidating to a new teacher, but it is no reflection on the outstanding quality of the Shakespeare Set Free books. I have used this book in a ninth grade classroom and found it to be one of the best resources I have ever purchased for classroom use. It is not intended as a generic read-the-scene-answer-the-questions type of shortcut for overwhelmed teachers. It assumes that the teacher can handle the basics and instead offers up some of the most creative and engaging ideas for making the educational experience of studying a Shakespearean play more authentic and memorable. I love this book and the memories that using it with my students have provided for my students and myself. As a classroom teacher of 18 years, I thoroughly recommend it to any teacher who truly wants to bring Shakespeare to life in the classroom.

A few final thoughts about the projects mentioned in the last review: Ask any actor -- the best way to understand a script is to find yourself having to perform it. Not memorize and recite it, but actually perform it and make it real. If students are asked to do this and are coached through the process, they will truly understand the power of Shakespeare's words and drama. And kids will dance an Elizabethan dance wearing a homemade mask if the teacher presents the lesson correctly. Oh, and bribing them with food to eat at the "ball" never hurts, either. And in the end, if nothing else, they will talk about what they did in English class with their buddies at lunch. What are the chances of that happening if we stick to paper and pencil activities alone?

This solution-oriented therapy is neatly explained, using many anecdotes from the therapists' own experience, both professional and personal. The advice moves from areas of minor disagreements to marriage- or life-threatening ones and includes suggestions for responding to a spouse's violent or criminal behavior. no self help book would ever get a five from me

so a four is as high as i go. fives are reserved for literature. my husband and i read this book when we were a new couple (seven years ago). he and i both had alcholic fathers and so we are very familiar with the self help genre. and although it does seem simplistic in some ways, i found it to be a most valuable book. if your relationship is at the point where you are afraid to sleep at night for fear of having your throat cut, this is not the book for you. (in fact there are no books for you run to a therapist) this book helps you become aware of the small things we do and can do for each other to hurt or help intimate relationships. its kind of like a "doc my arm hurts when i do that. so don't do that" book but it focuses on things that you will not see (unless you are more observant than i). if is helpful on a day to day level and my husband and i still pull it out and reread chapters when we find ourselves being testy with each other. i recommend this book to all people.

fun and practical

It is a sounding, simple book, but the suggestions are practical. it seems to be "old-fashioned", but in this complicated world, when we all are over-emphasizing internal psychological problems, "behavior-ist" is ignored.
This book reminds us to pick "them" up again and take a look at these simple but yet working principles of human behavior and relationship.

A Self-Help That's Really Helpful!

Unfortunately, many self help books and tapes are one
person's viewpoint on how to solve a problem and have not
been shown to work for a broad spectrum of individuals. This
tape is not one of them. O'Hanlon & Hudson have taken a
very effective method of changing behavior and adapted it to
helping couples. The tape is entertaining and extremely
helpful. It not only explains the why's of couple problems,
but also gives great suggestions on how to solve any problems.
