Your students will own Shakespeare!

I've been using this series for the last seven years and have found it works with almost any age group from Junior High to High School (The lessons could really be adapted for any age). Students are up on their feet, analyzing material, making decisions, having a blast. I read some of the lessons thinking, "No way will my kids go for this." When I challenged myself to try them, they were extremely successful. Shakespeare was never meant to be read sitting still. There are lessons that appear drama based, but these are plays people! (Take this from someone who is not comfortable acting - this is worth the risk.) In order to act out a scene or show subtext, students have to be able to analyze the text and understand it. These lessons guide them through every step! My students felt progressively confident in their ability to understand Shakespeare without my help. On my end-of-the-year survey, 95% of my kids said the Shakespeare Unit was their favorite! At the beginning of the year, it was the unit they feared the most. Try it out!

Experience of a lifetime!

That's what my students told me after I used this book's unit for teaching "A Midsummer Night's Dream" through performance. That was last spring, and I'm about to use it again. "Yes, we've heard all about that!" exclaimed my current Advanced English 11 students with grins and excited anticipation. Even the shy find their niche in this gently encouraging format for understanding and interpreting Shakespeare. I plan to use many of the book's ideas for our upcoming Macbeth unit as well. I am incredibly grateful for this wonderful book! If you are a teacher who wants to avoid the "Play the tape - read along" method of teaching Shakespeare, BUY THIS BOOK!

Note added May 13, 2005: Having used this a second time with my Advanced English 11, I can say that it was MORE successful, they ADORED it, and MSND performance work gave them a very deep understanding of Shakespeare which enabled them to blaze through Macbeth in three weeks - and they loved it, too! This book has opened new doors for me and for my students.

A Wonderful Resource!

I read the last review and had to respond. The reviewer stated that "this isn't drama class." I beg to differ -- a drama unit is drama, and no play is complete simply on the page without bringing it to life in some type of performance. This can be intimidating to a new teacher, but it is no reflection on the outstanding quality of the Shakespeare Set Free books. I have used this book in a ninth grade classroom and found it to be one of the best resources I have ever purchased for classroom use. It is not intended as a generic read-the-scene-answer-the-questions type of shortcut for overwhelmed teachers. It assumes that the teacher can handle the basics and instead offers up some of the most creative and engaging ideas for making the educational experience of studying a Shakespearean play more authentic and memorable. I love this book and the memories that using it with my students have provided for my students and myself. As a classroom teacher of 18 years, I thoroughly recommend it to any teacher who truly wants to bring Shakespeare to life in the classroom.

A few final thoughts about the projects mentioned in the last review: Ask any actor -- the best way to understand a script is to find yourself having to perform it. Not memorize and recite it, but actually perform it and make it real. If students are asked to do this and are coached through the process, they will truly understand the power of Shakespeare's words and drama. And kids will dance an Elizabethan dance wearing a homemade mask if the teacher presents the lesson correctly. Oh, and bribing them with food to eat at the "ball" never hurts, either. And in the end, if nothing else, they will talk about what they did in English class with their buddies at lunch. What are the chances of that happening if we stick to paper and pencil activities alone?

no self help book would ever get a five from me

so a four is as high as i go. fives are reserved for literature. my husband and i read this book when we were a new couple (seven years ago). he and i both had alcholic fathers and so we are very familiar with the self help genre. and although it does seem simplistic in some ways, i found it to be a most valuable book. if your relationship is at the point where you are afraid to sleep at night for fear of having your throat cut, this is not the book for you. (in fact there are no books for you run to a therapist) this book helps you become aware of the small things we do and can do for each other to hurt or help intimate relationships. its kind of like a "doc my arm hurts when i do that. so don't do that" book but it focuses on things that you will not see (unless you are more observant than i). if is helpful on a day to day level and my husband and i still pull it out and reread chapters when we find ourselves being testy with each other. i recommend this book to all people.

It is a sounding, simple book, but the suggestions are practical. it seems to be "old-fashioned", but in this complicated world, when we all are over-emphasizing internal psychological problems, "behavior-ist" is ignored.
This book reminds us to pick "them" up again and take a look at these simple but yet working principles of human behavior and relationship.

Unfortunately, many self help books and tapes are one
person's viewpoint on how to solve a problem and have not
been shown to work for a broad spectrum of individuals. This
tape is not one of them. O'Hanlon & Hudson have taken a
very effective method of changing behavior and adapted it to
helping couples. The tape is entertaining and extremely
helpful. It not only explains the why's of couple problems,
but also gives great suggestions on how to solve any problems.

I should have waited for the second edition

Overall I found this book to be helpful in understanding the inner workings of the Zend Framework. The low score I gave this book is attributed to the several errors in the code examples. It seems this book was rushed to publication and nobody verified that the code examples worked.

If you are like me and like to build the code as you read each chapter then this book is NOT for you. I could never get the code to work as written in the book. I would advise that you download the companion code from the publisher's website. The code from the site seems to have been tweaked after the publication of the book and does run correctly. Problem is it does not match the code in the book therefore you have to investigate why the book says one way while the code shows it another way. Very frustrating the say the least!

I can only recommend this book if the publisher decides to release a second edition with these errors fixed.

Great resource, rushed editing

As anyone who pre-ordered this book knows, it was way off its release schedule. That may explain the numerous errors in the book.
I am only on day 2 of the book and so far I have found at least 5 errors. These are not misprints but clear technical errors. The errors are in differing areas too, so not like the author simply misunderstood something, which leads me to believe this book, while already late, was rushed out of the door.
The book comes with online source code, and my advice would be to get it. If you follow the source in the book you will get errors both from the database code and the PHP code. In chapter 3, for example, the author lays out a database table schema which clearly states that certain fields cannot be NULL and have no default value, and then goes on to state INSERT statements that miss these fields out...thus generating an error. Another example is where on one page the application library folder is called just that in an image, but then i the PHP code it is referred to as "lib", again creating an error when the code is ran.

On the plus side the detail is very good. The first couple of chapters lay out the "why"s and "where"s of Zend Framework, and the real world example that the book builds on gives you a much more usable path of learning than someone simply telling you the details of the framework itself. Definitely a preferred approach for me!

I would like to rate the book higher but having to wait for almost an extra month to get it and then penciling in the errata certainly does not build confidence in it.

An excellent start, could use more polish

I find myself in agreement with most of the other reviewers. I had pre-ordered the book and watched its development through numerous e-book releases.

The extent to which it covers the fundamental but not as often explained concepts so important to the Framework (Helpers, etc) is impressive, and it covers a lot of ground. I had many 'a-ha' moments.

However, I also had a fair amount of frustration with the code examples in the book (the code on the web site ZIP file does seem to be absent these errors) - many syntax errors, and such. I also found it a little frustrating when the code examples were broken down so finely, into a couple of lines at a time, and often crossing multiple files (but without mentioning this).

However, the book is excellent and a great resource, and I'd be keen to see how a 2nd Edition looked.

Best Ramadan book I've read!

Our family has several Ramadan books, written by both Muslims and non-Muslims. This is the best Ramadan book I've read by far. It hits all the highlights about what the month is about, and it does so with lovely prose and illustrations. More than that though, it really captures the emotions of the month- excitement at sighting the crescent to begin Ramadan; tiredness, humility, thankfulness after a day of fasting; sadness as we realize the month is coming to a close; striving harder to do more good deeds; and excitement about the Eid celebration. I know it's hard for non-Muslims to understand the emotional attachment Muslims have for a whole month of fasting, but this book does a great job of trying to put those feelings into words. Well done Na'ima Robert and Shirin Adl!

I enjoy her books, and so do my kids. The artwork is so unique, and the pictures illustrate the culture and practices really well. I sent this book to my son's preschool, and his teachers enjoyed them the most. She also has a Hajj one.

About the Author
Kathleen McWhorter (Ph.D. SUNY, Buffalo) is Professor of Humanities and Coordinator of Learning Skills at Niagara County Community College. In addition to her developmental writing series from Houghton Mifflin, McWhorter is the author of several successful reading and study skills texts from Longman including College Reading and Study Skills, Efficient and Flexible Reading, Academic Reading, and Guide to College Reading. Recently, Bedford Books also published a new title from McWhorter, Successful College Writing, for freshman composition courses.

I like the integrated reading/writing format

I have used this book for a few semesters now. I like the integrated reading/writing format. I find the stories to be engaging, but they are in many cases too difficult for the level of students this book is intended for. The book is also too much to get through in one semester, so I would like to see a condensed version of it for a cheaper price in the future. Overall, I think it's a good textbook.
