PreS-Gr 1–A sweet story about the simple happiness that comes from staying true to oneself. Big Bear outgrows his old boat and decides to build himself a bigger one. It is perfect: “You are just what I dreamed you would be,” Big Bear says. But his friends suggest improvements: a mast, a top deck, and a cabin, which turn the boat into a bit of a mess. Big Bear politely thanks his pals for their input, but says, “This boat is not my dream,” returns the boat to its original form, and happily rows around the lake. This follow-up to Bunting's Little Bear's Little Boat (Clarion, 2003) illustrates life lessons on listening to one's inner voice and respectfully sharing differences of opinion with a light touch. The quiet, straightforward text is in perfect harmony with the peaceful illustrations of the lake on which the animals live. Carpenter's pen, ink, and digital media images have a classic look. The kindness and honesty that Big Bear shows to his friends, even when they don't agree, is a positive example for kids learning how to socialize with peers.–Marian McLeod, Darien Library, CTα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
Once upon a time, Big Bear was a little bear who outgrew his boat and gave it away (Little Bear’s Little Boat, 2004). Now Big Bear is building a new vessel “just like my little boat, but bigger.” When he finishes, it’s bright blue with a white stripe and just the right size for Big Bear to stretch out in. Over at Huckleberry Lake, when it’s time to put her on the water, Beaver comes along and suggests Big Bear build a mast for his fine boat; then Otter suggests a top deck; and Heron, a cabin. Soon it looks nothing like the boat Big Bear always imagined. His friends understand that he’s unhappy, and after some dismantling, the boat is back to its perfect original state. With spare, gentle text and cozy ink-and-paint illustrations, this picture book is nostalgic in feel and has a simple, timeless message about following one’s dreams. We all want a little place to call our own, and kids will feel Big Bear’s satisfaction as he contentedly spends a day on the lake, listening to the water and watching the stars. Preschool. --Ann Kelley

Review
"A story riding on a Thoreau-vian sensibility with a Zen serenity. . . . This story is more than just a tale of sticking to your vision—it's a small world unto itself. A keeper."

Teaches Children To Follow Thier Own Dreams
By C. Curran
My favorite books to read to children are the ones that teaches lessons and this book accomplishes that. The main character is Big Bear. When he was younger he built a boat but has since outgrew it so he gives the boat to a little bear who fits into it quite nicely. So now Big Bear needs to build himself a bigger boat. He tells his mom that he wants his bigger boat to look just like the little boat because he loved his little boat so much.

So he builds a bigger boat exactly as he wants it to look like. The picture in the book shows him sitting in his newly built boat and the caption reads, "He worked hard, and soon his big boat was finished. 'You are just what I dreamed you would be.' he told it fondly.

However, Big Bear's well meaning friends tell him that he needs to add to it. A beaver tells him he needs a mast, an otter told Big Bear that he needed a deck, and a blue heron tells him he needs to have a cabin. And so, Big Bear continues to build his boat to his friends specifications.

He steps back and looks at the new additions to the boat, and he doesn't like what he sees. The picture shows Big Bear looking at the boat. The caption reads: "Oh, What an ugly big boat I've made. The mast leans over, the deck slants, and the cabin is higgledy-piggledy."

In the very next picture, Big Bear is talking to his friends and the caption reads: "Big Bear knew what was wrong. But he didn't want to hurt his friends feelings. He thought hard. 'All of you tried to help me and I thank you. But I'm still the same bear I was before. Only now I'm bigger. And this boat is not my dream. A bear should never let go of his own dream.'

The rest of the book shows how the bear is enjoying his boat now that the bigger boat is according to how he dreamed it to be. Such a great lesson to teach children.

Well, that is my review. I thank you for reading it and I hope it has helped you. If you like my review please let Amazon know by clicking on the "Yes" button below. Have a great day and happy reading to all.

Excellent sequel to Little Bear's Little Boat
By Richard and Liz
Our 3 year old fell in love with Little Bear in the first book so was VERY excited when we found Big Bear's Big Boat to carry on the story. Big Bear gave away his boat in the previous book & is now building a big boat. His friends all tell him what should be on the boat so he listens to them & ends up with an ugly monstrosity that he doesn't like. He takes all the "extras" off and is then content with his plain boat, the way he originally designed it.

Enjoy!

A worthy sequel to the excellent Little Boat
By D. Whiteside
Not quite as great a book as Little Boat, which communicates a wonderful message of growing up, letting go, and generosity. But still a pleasant read with a nice "be true to yourself" sort of message. Big Bear listens to his friends and, realizing they're well-meaning but giving advice not right for him, kindly tells them so. If the message isn't as touching it's still masterfully done. I won't hesitate to buy any more of Ms Bunting's books for my little one.
